Did you know today is National Women’s Day? We seldom applaud the superwomen in our lives, and Women’s Day on March 8th is the perfect time to celebrate the mothers, aunts, daughters and grandmothers in our lives and all that they do.
We would like to share two extraordinary mothers and their stories:
Kathy King is a 53 year old mother who was diagnosed ten years ago with stage one breast cancer. What sets her apart from the rest is that during this time, she was a single working mother raising two daughters and fighting for her life. Kathy’s diagnosis changed everything, but her determination to stay healthy for herself and her family has made her a stronger, happier person and a breast cancer survivor – and closer to her daughters than ever. Her battle with cancer has allowed her to meet other inspiring people, as Kathy actively participates in the Philadelphia Hope Afloat Dragon Boat Team. All the women on the team are Breast Cancer Survivors like Kathy and they form a sisterhood of strength and support.

Susan Backes is a single mother from Doylestown, PA raising five children ages 6 through 18. This may seem like a feat in itself, but what sets the Backes family apart is that all members suffer from varying degrees of severe food allergies. Susan herself suffers from allergies as well, but she constantly strives to learn more about her children’s allergies each day, dealing with everything from school safety, attending birthday parties, support groups, advocacy, awareness and much more. Everything that enters her home is cleared by her. If it has to do with allergies—she knows about it.

Susan and Kathy have appeared in a video series titled “Charmed for Life” by Hope Paige, where both women have created videos highlighting their experiences and sharing their struggles.
